He vanished in April 1970 at the age of 30 with two of his colleagues on a road in Cambodia controlled by the Khmer Rouge. In 2007 Marianne Caron, the wife of the photographer, created the Gilles Caron Foundation to award to the vanished photographer the place he deserves in the history of journalism, art and photography.

Vietnam. In 1955, Vietnam was divided into two states. South Vietnam was supported by the United States, North Vietnam by China and URSS. By the 1967, more than 500.000 American soldiers were in South Vietnam. In November 1967 at the battle of Dak To, the Americans wished to control the passage of the Ho Chi Minh Tral through which passed reinforcements and munitions. The battle was one of the fiercest of the Vietnam war. Gilles spent the months of November and December in Vietnam. He participated in the battle of Dak To, flying in a helicopter which brought back dead soldiers before setting off again. However, he also photographed the life of soldiers and life in Saigon.

Israel. Gilles went to Israel after completing a report on Sylvie Vartan who was presenting a fashion collection in her own name. He had noticed that there were a lot of troops movements. He left his film in Paris and set off again very quickly for Jerusalem. He had his films sent from Tel Aviv Airport and Gamma released his films all over the world , an action which gave widespread fame to the Gamma agency and Gilles Caron names. The 5th to 10th June 1967 saw the Six-Day War which opposed the state of Israel and three of its neighbours: Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Considering itself to the threatened, in particular by the Egypt of Gamal Abdel Nasser and by the new Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) of Yasser Arafat, which had been created in 1964, Israel launched a pre-emptive attack under the direction of the Minister of Defence Moshe Dayan. The Egypitian air force was destroyed on the ground. Israel annexed the West Bank, the Arab part of Jerusalem, the Golan Height, Gaza and Sinai with its oilfields, as far as the Suez Canal. One million Arabs fell under its administration whilst the state of Israel went from an area of 21,000 to 102,000 square kilometres.

Biafra. Nigeria in a former British colony. The war in Biafra lasted from 1967 to 1970. The region of Biafra, a province of Nigeria, became the Republic of Biafra, led by Colonel Ojukwu. The Nigerian government decided to impose a blockade on the province. China and France supported Biafra. Britain, the United States and the URSS supported the federal government. Starting at the time of the declaration of independence in May 1967, the war finished with the capitulation of the Briafran troops in January 1970. Famine caused one and a half million deaths. Médecins sans Frontières was born of the experience of French doctors in Biafra. Gilles Caron went to Biafra three times. In Avril 1968, he was charged with the repatriation of the body of a photographer who had worked for Gamma. In July, he discovered the reality of the famine and in November 1968, he accompanied the mercenaries.

L’aviazione egiziana fu distrutta a terra.
