She doesn’t like to be called an artist, yet Marilena Tucci is, today, one of the most representative emerging artists from Puglia. Born in 1973, she sacrificed her greatest artistic passion to follow in her parents’ footsteps and take care of the management of the family business that allows her to study the evolution of design and take inspiration for a part of her artistic production but literally cut them wings. And she didn’t fit.

Passionate, sensitive, nostalgic, ironic, socially committed and nonconformist, Marilena Tucci expresses the inner conflict of a generation that has decided to stay in their land but does not feel represented by it. The Puglia of the artists of the 2020s is not the one represented on a postcard of Salento or instagrammed by influencers and bloggers who are not attentive to the true local reality, that of traditions, people, customs and even the languages that differentiate the communities.

Beauty out of time, face with marked features reminiscent of the young Liz Taylor in the famous Cleopatra, a colossal shot in 1963 and directed by Joseph Manckewicz, Marilena manages with her penetrating gaze to communicate much more than she tells by explaining her works and process to make them.

I had the pleasure of having a coffee with Marilena this summer on a muggy August afternoon in her loft-house in Altamura and she showed me her latest creations and new projects that keep her busy. The thing that struck me most is the subdivision of the spaces according to her artistic productions: shelf to paint and create, screen and console to produce new pieces of music, vases, objects, jewels, books, lights, everything you need to produce art in the true sense of the word, an art to communicate but also an art to reflect, starting from our social and intimate condition without ever forgetting our memories, our childhood. A powerful and anti-conformist but also intimate art.

It is difficult to circumscribe the limit of her artistic production simply because it does not exist. Marilena curated and produced a video project with a group of young people from Bologna’s DAMS to reflect on gender differences, parent-child conflicts and the issue of prostitution.

With the Municipality of Altamura she participated with the installation "L’Aquilone" aimed at making people reflect on the condition of the children of separated parents and the role of human beings in society. Marilena is an art designer, engaged for over 15 years in the recovery and recycling of materials for the creation of artistic installations and in the organization of educational workshops for children.

Marilena Tucci is an artist, curator, designer and creator of jewelry, completes her artistic research in video art and music production. Her installations are famous, those that denounce the exploitation of environmental resources and climate change. Her entire line of design objects and jewels has as its purpose the recycling and reuse of objects that would otherwise be pulped and give them new life. Among the many projects for the future, the participation in the next Fuori Salone in Milan and the Venice Design Week to be held in conjunction with the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021.
